Although all of Belize is beautiful, the western interior Cayo District is especially known for its spectacular geological and ecological diversity.

Ek' Tun is a 200-acre, neotropical rainforest retreat on the Macal River, bordering the country's largest contiguous area of jungle and reserves which rises majestically from the northern edge of the Vaca Plateau and encompasses Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Vaca Plateau Reserve, the Chiquibul Rainforest, Maya Mountains, Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve, Bladen Nature Reserve and Columbia Rainforest in the south.

Ek' Tun is located approximately twelve miles upstream or 15 miles by road from San Ignacio, within easy hiking distance of Vaca Falls. There is no road all the way to the property, but by the end of your half-hour LandRover ride and scenic boat trip upriver, you come to realize you have, indeed, reached the very edge of civilization. Ek' Tun is the most private lodge in Belize, inaccessible and exclusively available only to registered guests. With our recently implemented "ADULTS ONLY" policy, this assures a secure, carefree, restful or romantic hideaway where you can restore your connection with the natural environment.

The Ek' Tun grounds resemble a garden oasis in the midst of a tropical rainforest. We have miles of hiking trails, through hundreds of acres of lush, undisturbed habitat providing unsurpassed birding, hiking, and exploring. This section of the Macal River has beautiful, secluded, sandy beaches interspersed with black slate formations, and small rapids for exciting river activities. Several troupes of howler monkeys (lone adult male in the photo at right) frequent the area, and can often be heard claiming their territory both during the day and at night. Other interesting wildlife abounds as well, and with such rich diversity of flora and fauna, careful observers are generally well rewarded. We also are fortunate to include a host of personable domestic and temporary residents, to the added delight of guests who are animal lovers.

While most of our guests spend the first few days of their stay enjoying the numerous activities and adventures here on the premises, during a longer stay there are also opportunities to take tours and excursions to a variety of attractions and activities in the surrounding area. We have a three-night minimum, but there's more than enough to keep you content for a week!

We are an American couple from Massachusetts, who have had an interest in travel to Mexico and central America for some years. After several trips south, we landed in Belize. Jaguar Paw Jungle Resort

Cave Tubing, Jungle Canopy Zip Line, Butterfly Farm, Zorbing Down Hill inside a 11 foot ball and so much more to do.
Jaguar Paw is full of surprises. It suddenly appears like a mirage among the fan palms and tropical flowers at the bottom of a steep, rocky road.. The architectural motif of the main building and its satellites is Mayan, of course, with bas relief of god heads on the exterior walls. But would you expect a spectacular dining room and bar with 25-foot ceilings and a water wall waiting there for you in the middle of the jungle? Or would you expect to find guest rooms uniquely decorated with such novelties as lace shower curtains, puppets on the ceiling, or furnishings made from the stones and trees of the jungle itself? Or how about a pristine swimming pool awaiting the moonlight swimmer?

Equally surprising is that when a new morning begins, so do the adventures. On the 200-acres of Jaguar Paw are the mouths of three awesome caves with vestiges of their use by Mayan ancestors. With guests in boats or wearing inner tubes experienced guides lead the way through the labyrinth of waterways connecting the caves. But without getting their feet wet guests aided by a knowledgeable guide can stalk the jungle paths for signs of wild animals, to spot some of the more than 500 species of birds, to recognize the medicinal herbs, and to hear about the jungle ghosts from the Belizean Bushmen who believe in them. And, not far in either direction from the resort are ancient ruins awaiting exploration.

Three years in the making, Jaguar Paw was opened in late January by Donna Young, a former food and beverage manager, and Cy Young, a businessman. "We don't believe that people who love the jungle have to live like Tarzan and Jane to enjoy their adventure," says Donna Young. "We're betting that after a strenuous day our guests will want perhaps a cool drink, a hot shower, a good gourmet meal, and comfortable bed."

If you have just checked in and wish to acclimate yourself to the facility, a hundred yard walk on the road you just came in on will take you to the Caves Branch River and the mouth of one of our smaller caves. Don't be afraid of the dark, at night the cave is subtly illuminated providing a romantic setting for a late night dip.

If you follow the walkway to the right of the main building, you will find our aviary and gift shop just past the swimming pool. A further walk past the pool just ten minutes beyond our employee quarters, a jungle path will lead you to one of the largest and most spectacular caves in Belize. We also have nine miles of trails varying in degrees of difficulty, so please consult with the front desk before exploring these on your own.

Mountain Equestrian Trails is a small lodge built within a moist tropical broadleaf forest at the base of the immense and largely pristine Mountain Pine Ridge escarpment. It offers an appealing combination of thatched roof cottages at the main lodge set carefully under the rainforest canopy along the side of a mountain.

The Cabanas are made of stucco and hardwoods, with a native-style thatched roof. Each room offers Maya woven tapestries, private baths with hot water, and a deck with table and chairs for every room. There is no electricity in the rooms; kerosene lamps provide lighting and exotic ambiance. Mosquito nets, though rarely needed, are provided, so you can leave your windows open and enjoy the cool evening breezes.

The Cantina is the center of action, being a general meeting area, bar, and restaurant. We serve delicious home-style cooking with local entrees, fish, barbeque, pizza, tacos, rice and beans, homemade tortillas, breads, cakes and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, many which are grown right in the area.

Horseback Riding will take you to secluded and interesting destinations. You can ride to one of several waterfalls to enjoy a picnic lunch and swimming. Or you can explore various dry caves or even canoe deep inside an underground river cave. A pre-ride orientation will give the rider important information concerning our particular trails and horses. We take care to match the rider (by obtaining height, weight, and riding ability) with the most suitable horse and tack. Rain gear, water bottles, camera bags, and gourmet picnic lunches are provided. During planning, we select interesting routes, passing through varied ecosystems while your guide describes traditional uses of plants. Included are visits to Maya ruins, and the exhilarating experience of riding through a pristine environment. It is important that riders wear riding boots, hiking boots, or tennis shoes (with socks), and long (preferably single-seamed) trousers or jodhpurs. All half day and full day rides include breaks for swimming, caving, and picnic lunches.

Our Riverview cottages overlook the Little Vaqueros creek with screened-in porches and hammocks for our guests' privacy. The Mayan cottages are large native-style freestanding cottages, built with materials gathered from the forest, including thatched roofs. The Forestview cottage enjoys the sound of our bubbling river, the Little Vaqueros Creek, and a breathtaking vista of the surrounding forest. Orchids throughout the area add color to the lodge's accommodations. We have been collecting and transplanting orchids of all sizes, shapes and colors to adorn the paths within Pine Ridge Lodge for years. The flowers drape the trees and enchant the landscape.

PARROT NEST is a truly unique tropical experience. Spending the night under a 100 foot guanacaste tree in a thatched tree house is like nothing else! The lodge is surrounded on three sides by the Mopan River, so a refreshing swim in clear water is never far away and the wildlife of the area abound. Yes, parrots are in great number here, along with hundreds of other types of birds, making this an ideal location for bird watching. Coati, agouti, otter, and the giant iguana are among the many animals which are regular visitors to our beautiful gardens which, though lush and exotic, are virtually mosquito free, a real bonus for those who love the great outdoors - and a good nights sleep.

Bullet Tree Falls is the last outpost before the great forests to the west, south and north. Though Spanish-speaking, everyone also speaks English. Located just outside the village, PARROT NEST consists of two tree houses, four cabins, and two bathhouses. Children are welcome. Breakfast and dinner are served on the verandah of the main house. Dinners are generous, healthy and fresh, meals for vegetarians are provided on request. Clean drinking water is always available.

Only three miles from San Ignacio, the hub of Cayo, PARROT NEST is an ideal home base for your explorations of this fascinating district with its rivers (including falls and cascades), caves, archeological sites, jungle walks, medicine trails, butterfly farms and many more attractions. You can take public transport (the taxi collectiva) to Bullet Tree Falls and then make the easy, ten minute walk to the lodge, or you can get a taxi right to the gate for US$7.50.
